WHAT IS DELTA 9?

Let’s discuss the most obvious question you may have! Seems reasonable! Some of you may not even know what Delta-9 is, and that’s OK! A lot of you are probably pretty sure you know what marijuana is, but maybe you’ve never even heard of Delta-9. Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, Delta-9 (and other cannabinoids) are getting a lot more hype. We’d like to help you learn the basics of what Delta-9 is and what it does.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is a cannabinoid, a chemical found in both marijuana and hemp. Delta-9 is the most abundant, well-known and well-studied form of THC, and it is attributed to the “buzzy” or intoxicated feeling associated with THC use. It’s not the same as CBD; Delta-9 is intoxicating, CBD is not. THC works by attaching to the body's cannabinoid receptors, which are found throughout the brain and nervous system. THC also activates the “reward center” in your brain to trigger the release of dopamine, which is the chemical messenger that tells your brain to give you feelings of pleasure, satisfaction and motivation. It’s that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you win a game or see a friend or hug your mama.

The Delta-9 is found in both marijuana and hemp are identical on a molecular level. They interact with your the endocannabinoid in an identical manner. The distinction is that the Delta-9 found in hemp is the one that was made federally legal due to the Farm Bill. Some states and municipalities have self-regulated the availability of Delta-9 products, but they are legal across the majority of the US. Legal Delta-9 products must be (1) hemp-based and (2) contain no more than 0.3% Delta 9 THC by dry weight.
